Red Army Faction, Baader-Meinhof Group

The Rote Armee Fraktion (RAF), commonly translated as the Red Army Faction, was a militant far-left organization active in West Germany from 1970 until its dissolution in 1998. The RAF carried out bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, and bank robberies, killing around 34 people—including industrialists, bankers, police officers, and American military personnel stationed in Germany.

Often referred to in the media as the Baader-Meinhof Group (after founding members Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof), the group emerged from the radical student movement of the late 1960s. Its members were deeply critical of West Germany’s post-war establishment, which they accused of harbouring former Nazis in government, business, police and judiciary. Ideologically, the RAF combined anti-imperialism with strands of libertarian communism and Marxist-Leninism, framing its struggle as part of a global resistance against American hegemony and capitalist oppression. Early members received guerrilla warfare training from Palestinian militants, and the group’s tactics included sabotage, expropriation (armed robberies), and maintaining underground networks of safe houses.
