In July 1936, General Francisco Franco launched a right-wing military coup against Spain’s democratically elected Popular Front government, a coalition of socialists, communists, and left-republicans. Backed by the aristocracy, large landowners, and the Catholic Church, Franco sought to crush the land and social reforms that were improving the situation for the working class and peasants living in semi-feudal Spain. The coup was met with fierce resistance from organized workers, particularly members of the anarcho-syndicalist trade union: Confederacion Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) and the militant Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI).

Across much of Spain - especially in industrial strongholds like Barcelona and anarchist-dominated regions such as Aragón and Catalonia - the armed working class and peasant militias successfully halted the fascist uprising and started to create a revolutionary society based on libertarian communist principles. Factories were seized and placed under worker control and land was collectivised. The CNT, which had millions of members, played a central role in organizing these efforts, establishing decentralized councils and militias to defend the revolution.

The governments of the European liberal democracies abandoned Spain - signing a non-intervention agreement with most European countries. Franco’s forces, bolstered by military aid including troops, tanks and planes, from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy (both signatories to the non-intervention agreement) gained ground and the revolutionary momentum was increasingly reversed. The Republican government, under pressure from Stalinist communists and liberal factions, sought to centralize control and rein in the anarchist-led social revolution, prioritizing a united anti-fascist front. Despite this, the CNT and other radical groups continued to fight both on the battlefield and through cultural mobilization.

Propaganda posters became a vital tool in the struggle, used by anarchist, socialist, and communist groups to rally support, educate the masses, and inspire resistance. These posters were not just art - they were a direct extension of the revolutionary movement, plastered on city walls, distributed in union halls, and carried into battle. They symbolized the workers’ defiance against fascism and their vision of a new society. The revolution was eventually crushed by Franco’s forces in 1939, but the legacy of resistance and the powerful imagery of the Spanish Civil War endured as a testament to the power of organized labour and revolutionary ideals.
